You’re a beginner Spanish learner who dreams of reading blogs, travel guides, newspaper articles, or even novels in Spanish.
But every time you try to read something in Spanish, you get discouraged.
You get lost even when you read a short social media post or a WhatsApp message.
Or maybe, when you try to read a novel, you get stuck because you have so many unknown words that you can´t get past the first paragraphs or pages.
Then you pick up an easy book for Spanish students and immediately feel like you’re cheating. You feel like it’s too simple and that you’re wasting your time.
You might think that to improve your Spanish, you have to read difficult stuff; that if reading is easy, you are not learning, or that if you are not constantly looking up words, you are not progressing.
Be honest:
Do you actually enjoy reading in Spanish, or does it feel like a slow, frustrating chore you avoid?
Is reading in Spanish a rewarding experience, or does it feel more like punishment?
I know how frustrating it is when your reading is slow, effortful, and it takes forever to read a single page.
And I also know that the first step to solving this problem is for you to realize that:
👉Books at your reading level are your shortcut to reading fluency.
👉They will help you master the basic reading skills necessary for deep understanding.
Comprehensible Spanish books:
meet you right where you are
challenge you but not overwhelm you
boost your confidence
make you want to keep reading
So, no, they will not slow you down. They will actually help you move forward.
It´s the advanced books in Spanish that are actually holding you back if you are a beginner.
Even if you have been told that Spanish is “hard” to learn and you need to “study” grammar and vocabulary for hours and hours, I´m here to tell you the opposite.
Comprehensible and compelling books are easy to read, interesting, and fun. They will help you progress toward authentic Spanish texts and literature sooner than you think.
With this article, I want to help you make a confident, informed decision about how you approach reading in Spanish when you are a novice reader.
And for that, I will use the metaphor of the juggler. 🤹
Let me show you how your dream of reading fluently in Spanish can become a reality.
But let me explain first what exactly reading fluency is.
Let´s dive in!
If reading in Spanish feels easy… you´re doing it right
You might think that learning must feel difficult to be effective.
You may have spent years in school highlighting, memorizing, translating, and struggling through difficult texts. So when something feels smooth or enjoyable, it can almost feel suspicious—like it can’t possibly be working.
Reading something easy can sometimes make you feel… uncomfortable. Maybe even a little embarrassed.
You might think:
“This feels too easy… am I even learning anything?”
“Reading short and simple books makes me look stupid.”
“I should be reading real literature, as I do in English.”
“I don´t like my reading level in Spanish. It´s too basic.”
I hear the above valid concerns from my students all the time.
It´s because, amongst language learners, there’s often confusion between reading for pleasure and studying.
Both forms of reading are necessary, but they are very different.
Many learners approach books like textbooks, stopping at every unknown word, reaching for the dictionary constantly, and trying to “analyze” everything.
So when a book doesn’t force them to “study” it, it can feel like it’s not doing its job.
But here’s the point:
✨ Ease is fluency at your current level.
✨Ease means your brain is processing Spanish automatically, without effort.
Your brain needs to practice with comprehensible and compelling books before it can handle more complex texts.
Let me show you exactly why. I love metaphors, so I will use the metaphor of the juggler.🤹
My students love it too!
Reading in Spanish is like juggling, and you are a novice juggler (for now!)
Reading fluency means you can do the following things effortlessly:
You recognize words quickly, as soon as you see them, and you read them correctly.
You read at the right pace: not too slow and not too fast.
You read with expression, intonation, and rhythm. You emphasize certain words, and you sound natural, not robotic.
Fluent readers don´t stop to decode, don´t struggle to pronounce, and don´t pause to think about the meaning of every word. They read automatically without much effort and use all their brain energy for meaning-making.
A fluent reader does lots of things at the same time!
The following metaphor will help you understand what is happening when you read in English and Spanish.
Before I continue, I want to draw your attention to a very important detail: You were born to speak but not to read. If your first language is English, when you were practicing reading at school, you were connecting different parts of your brain and building what we will call your English reading brain.
Now, imagine reading like juggling. A fluent reader can juggle five balls at the same time.
Your English reading brain has years of experience in juggling! Your English reading brain is a juggling pro!
✅It recognizes words instantly.
✅It understands meaning automatically.
✅Knows how to handle one or two new words.
✅Reads fluently and effortlessly.
It doesn’t waste energy on basic reading skills. It uses all its energy to understand.
That’s why everything flows.
Your English reading brain can´t help you read Spanish, Greek, or Chinese.
You need to form a Spanish reading brain to read Spanish!

When you are a novice reader in Spanish, your Spanish reading brain is a novice juggler …and often clumsy (for now!)
It's like going back to first grade.
Actually, it's even harder. Because when native children start learning to read, they already understand about 8,000 words and use 2,500 actively. 🤯
You? If you are a beginner, you're starting with way fewer Spanish words.
When you read advanced texts in Spanish, your brain is trying to do everything at once:
🤹Recognize known words and remember their meaning
🤹Decode new words letter by letter and guess their meanings
🤹Descipher difficult structures and connect ideas between sentences
🤹Make meaning of the whole text
Normally, advanced texts have difficult vocabulary and complex structures. No wonder reading feels exhausting.
It’s like juggling five balls when you’ve barely learned how to throw two.
So what happens when you drop one ball?
Let’s imagine you don’t recognize a word; then the sentence stops making sense; you continue reading, but it feels confusing, and suddenly… you’ve lost the thread completely.
When your brain has to stop and consciously decode every word, it slows everything down. It’s like trying to read while constantly hitting the brakes.🛑
So you go back. You reread. You try again.
The process is slow, frustrating, and exhausting.
But fluency comes from ease, not struggle.
Without reading fluency, reading will always feel slow, tiring, and frustrating.
So no, easy books are not slowing you down.
They are actually training your brain to become a juggling pro!🤹
Let´s see why reading fluency is so important:
If you’re not fluent yet, you can’t fully understand
Why is reading fluency so important?
Let´s go back to the juggling metaphor.🤹
Why not make juggling easier? Why not start with just two balls instead of five? Why not lower the difficulty level?
When the book is at your level, magic happens 🪄
✅You stop fighting the text.
✅You stop translating every sentence.
✅You give your brain space to actually understand.
✅You gain ease, rhythm, and speed
Easy books allow your brain to practice recognizing words quickly and automatically while you gain reading rhythm and speed.
That’s how your Spanish reading brain, a novice juggler, trains to become a juggling pro.
If you start reading at your level, you enjoy it, and you can’t stop!
One comprehensible story leads to another.
One finished book leads to another book with more vocabulary.
More vocabulary leads to more challenging readings.
You gain confidence and fluency.
And one day, you pick up that novel or article you always wanted to read in Spanish, and it actually makes sense.
Here’s something many learners don’t realize:
✨Reading fluency gives your brain space for deep understanding.
✨Reading fluency must come first, and understanding will follow.
✨When you understand better, you enjoy reading.
Reading in Spanish for beginners can actually be easy and fun!
When you stop believing that reading has to feel hard to be effective, everything changes.
Instead of forcing yourself through frustrating texts, you start to:
🌟Enjoy reading in Spanish
🌟Finish books (and feel proud of it)
🌟Build vocabulary naturally
🌟Absorb structures effortlessly
Reading starts to feel lighter and more enjoyable. You feel proud, motivated, and you want to keep reading!
That’s how you move toward more complex texts like blogs (like this one!—read it in Spanish!), articles, magazines, and eventually literature in Spanish.
My Reading Program for Beginners trains you to become a juggling pro!
Many beginner or intermediate students come to me with the same question: “What can I read in Spanish?”
It´s a simple question, not so easy to answer. The answer depends on the reading level of each student. Some have never read in Spanish, and others read in Spanish, but they are struggling.
So, I decided to start Lee español ApasionadaMente, a reading program for beginners. A program that meets your reading level and helps you move forward.
Let me tell you how it all started:
Mia, a book lover and passionate reader, believed that reading her favorite novels in Spanish was a great way to start. After all, she knew the characters and the story very well. She was a juggling pro in English, but a novice juggler in Spanish.
When she tried to read her very first novel in Spanish, she didn’t make it past the first chapter. She felt disappointed with herself and overwhelmed.
Then she did an online search to find books for Spanish learners, but she couldn´t tell whether the books would be right for her level or interesting enough. In addition to that, she didn´t have time to experiment; she just wanted the right book for her.
So she asked for my professional opinion.
I recommended her Me perdí en Medellín, a comprehensible, very fun, and interesting book by Adriana Ramírez. We had a great time talking about the book during our 1:1 sessions. The conversation was deep and also personal, guided by a variety of questions I had prepared.
The experience was so significant for her that she invited other people to join the conversation, we decided on the next book…and the rest is history.
Mia went from feeling discouraged and stuck to reading in Spanish every single day. She feels confident and motivated, and has seen a huge improvement in her reading skills.
Mia has read all the books inside my program and is ready to start reading original literature!
So, yes! You can definitely improve your reading skills when you start with comprehensible and compelling books and follow a well-designed path with books that move you forward.
Today, my reading program for beginners, Lee español ApasionadaMente, consists of a complete reading program of 12 books.
The program is designed to help you move from beginner to intermediate reader without the overwhelm.
Here is how my program can help you gain reading fluency:
The first books are so easy that even if you can´t read or speak Spanish yet, you will feel comfortable with basic and useful expressions.
Each book is slightly more challenging than the last, so you can build your reading skills gradually.
The books are comprehensible and compelling, so you can keep your reading momentum.
The live conversation sessions are so interesting, engaging, and fun that you won´t want to miss them! (and yes, even if you are a beginner and you feel you can´t say a word, these books will help you talk!)
The best part?
All the books are written by female Latin American authors who share authentic stories of their communities that highlight their values, beliefs, and culture.
Lee español ApasionadaMente is not only about reading books. It´s a complete experience that combines: silent reading, reading out loud, conversation, writing, personal guidance, and above all, motivation and human connection.
